Very High Temperature Electronics
CoolCAD’s pioneering research in SiC has led to High Temperature Analog and Digital CMOS electronics that operate at temperatures as high as 500 oC. Silicon based electronics do not typically operate at temperatures greater than 250oC. However, CoolCAD’s electronics are made from the wide bandgap semiconductor SiC, which can operate at temperatures way higher than that of silicon. CoolCAD has developed unique SiC fabrication technology so we can make CMOS integrated circuits (chips) that operate at 300oC, 400oC and even 500oC. CoolCAD has developed digital and analog chips (amplifiers, logic and memory) that operate at 500oC. CoolCAD expects to soon be manufacturing microprocessors for 500oC operation. CoolCAD will also custom design and fabricate very high temperature electronics for your needs.

UV Avalanche Photodiodes (APD) and Avalanche Photodetectors
Avalanche Photodiodes (APD) are special solid-state photodetectors that have intrinsic gain. They can detect very low levels of UV light. APDs differ from standard photodetectors because in standard detectors one photon detected will generate one electron worth of current. The Avalanche Photodetectors are special because one photon will give rise to almost a million electrons worth of current. In other words, it has built-in gain and therefore highly sensitive. In addition, CoolCAD’s UV APDs are “Solar Blind”. This means that the diodes are not affected by visible light and can detect very faint UV signals in broad daylight, and do not need any special optical filters. Our APDs can also operate in “Geiger Mode”, where a single UV photon can generate an electronic pulse. Photons can then be counted using standard pulse counting electronics. CoolCADs APDs are made from Silicon Carbide using special semiconductor processing technology. Their responsivity is centered around wavelengths of 270nm.
Applications: Fire and Flame Detection; Biohazards Water and Air sterilization and purification; Jet engine monitoring; Rocket engine monitoring; Virus decontamination, Geiger Mode operation. Down-hole applications, UV curing, Spectroscopy, Optical instrumentation; APDs can be much smaller and lower voltage substitute for glass photomultiplier tubes. Our APDs are especially useful for detecting low-intensity or very faint UV sources.
UV Linear Photodiodes
CoolCAD’s UV Linear Photodiodes generate Photocurrent that is proportional to the amount of UV incident light in range (190nm to 350nm). They are carefully fabricated from SiC using high-temperature semiconductor fabrication techniques. CoolCAD’s linear diodes have high responsivity and benefit from having extremely low dark current. Since they do not suffer from visible light saturation, they can be used in broad daylight without a filter.

UV Pixel Arrays and UV Imagers
CoolCAD designs and fabricates SiC Focal Plane Arrays for applications in UV imaging. These unique UV passive pixel arrays currently are available in various sizes, with 50 and 100 micrometer pitch. CoolCAD’s UVC Passive Pixel Arrays generate photocurrent that is proportional to the amount of UV incident light in range (190nm to 350nm). These pixel arrays do not respond to visible light but are designed to function at their best in broad daylight, even without a filter. These unique products are made possible using CoolCAD’s specialized processing for SiC optoelectronic devices and circuits, that includes construction of distinct isolation between pixels to minimize cross-talk and optimize resolution.
